What is a concrete floor primer?
What are concrete floor primers? Eco Bond is an environmentally friendly water-based acrylic primer and sealer that penetrates deep into the surface to create a superior bond. Eco Bond seals the surface to ensure the topcoat will adhere much stronger than if it was used alone resulting in a great looking surface that will not blister or peel.
Our Eco Bond emits almost zero toxic odours (VOC’s) and is water-based, making it safe to use and minimising environmental impact.
Eco Bond is suitable for interior and exterior applications on virtually any surface including concrete, bitumen, slate, vinyl, ceramic and stone.
- Penetrating primer for outstanding adhesion
- Efflorescence resistant preventing blistering, dusting and chalking
- Superior flexibility eliminating cracking and delamination
- Chemical and water resistant to seal the surface
- Virtually odourless and friendly to the environment
- Ready to use from the container, easy to apply and fast drying
One coat will cover approximately 5 – 20 square metres per litre.
Surface must be clean, dry and free from grease, loose paint, oil, dust, curing agents or any foreign material that might prevent proper adhesion.
Concrete must have a relative humidity in the slab of below 80% (ASTM F-2170) or 5.5% with a Tramex metre.
Furthermore, all moisture should be kept away a minimum of 24 hours after application.
Before starting work, test surface to make sure there is no efflorescence or high levels of alkalinity. Alkalinity refers to a high pH reading which means the substrate is not neutral. A high alkalinity can cause salts to creep up through the substrate and cause a crystallisation called efflorescence. These salts have the tendency to prevent or destroy the bonding of coatings to the substrate.
The most common form of testing is the use of pH paper or tape. Make sure the surface pH reading ranges between 5-9 to ensure adhesion. The testing of the substrate for alkalinity can only show the amount of alkalinity at the time of the test and cannot be used to predict the longterm conditions.
Failure to adhere to these strict guidelines can result in product delamination, discolouration, blistering, or altogether failure of the coating system. Testing is the responsibility of the applicator. The manufacturer and supplier of this product bear no responsibility for failures due to any of the above conditions.
Concrete, Bitumen, Slate, Vinyl, Ceramic and Stone: Substrate should be made free from contaminants by diamond grinding or shot blasting. To clarify, when using other methods make sure it is porous and the product is able to soak in and properly bond. If using acid etches, ensure it is applied, neutralised and rinsed per manufacturer’s instructions and that the substrate is dry.
Existing Coatings: Sand the surface with 100 grit abrasive paper and remove debris with Recoat Etch just before the new application.
Primer: Firstly, Eco Bond is best applied straight out of the container onto the floor and spread evenly with a soft bristled broom. Secondly, Eco Bond should be applied liberally so that the concrete absorbs enough material to reach saturation. Finally, it should be worked into the surface to help penetration and adhesion.
Topcoat: Apply topcoats within 24 hours of the concrete floor primers coat.
• Do not apply in conditions above 30degrees or below 5 degrees
• Do not apply if it is raining or if rain might occur during the next 24 hours
• Always read SDS before use of any product

First Aid Instructions
If swallowed, dilute with milk or water. DO NOT induce vomiting. First aid is generally not required. Call a doctor if necessary.
If in eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes.
Remove contact lenses if present. Continue rinsing. May cause irritation and redness. Seek medical attention.
If on skin: wash with plenty of soap and water. May cause redness. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.
In conclusion, use with any other manufacturer’s product could result in detrimental effects on the product’s performance for which Ecoshield Performance Coatings holds no responsibility, and Ecoshield Performance Coatings
